We miners hoped to find gold. All of us were zany for it and were rushing to the nearest gold rush. This caused ghost towns, boom towns, and tent cities. If the gold strike was long lasting, permanent buildings went up in the tent cities.
Ghost towns are towns with very few people in them. The miners who had lived there had moved to a different town because of a new gold strike.
Boom towns are towns that popped up quickly because of the wave of miners who settled there.
Miners lived in harsh, unsanitary, and rugged terrain. The lack of nutritious food, vitamin C, and purified water caused malnutrition, scurvy, and cholera. Extreme cold, floods, and fires washed over the terrain too. These harsh conditions came over the fields, but we miners survived through them.
